Repairing engine lube oil pumps for two UK based ferries.

We have recently been awarded a job to repair two main engine lube oil pumps for two UK based ferries. When we received the pumps, they were not in a good condition at all and it was debatable whether they could be repaired back to a satisfactory working condition…
After analysing the pumps in detail, we decided that we would have to machine a large part of the front of the pump housings away, which is where the bulk of the wear and tear is, and have inserts manufactured which will be fixed into the space created.
We have drawn up the components on Autocad, have had the patterns made and are now awaiting the delivery of the castings which will be machined to suit. The bearings and rings will also be replaced, the case will be internally coated to protect it and the outer of the case will be repainted.
The work had to be approved by Lloyds of London because of the function performed by the pumps. The approved plan will save the ferry operator many thousands of pounds by not having to purchase new pumps.
